It’s Monday again so it’s time for me to reveal my latest Jam to get you through the week!
This week I was expecting a simple one, a certain tune by Baauer has taken the internet by storm over the last few days so you’d think that my Jam of the Week this week would be a no brainer. Well no it isn’t actually, I’ve decided that my Jam of the Week this week won’t be Baauer’s Harlem Shake but instead this terrific collaboration between Baauer himself and Just Blaze. It’s called Higher and as far as trap music goes it’s one of the best tracks I’ve heard so far.
For those of you who just went ‘what on earth is Trap Music’ here’s a very very watered down and basic definition courtesy of the Urban Dictionary.
Trap music is based on use of the 808 Roland drum machine, pitched and re-sampled hiphop/rap vocals, pipe flutes, gangsta synth leads, and various FX. In laymen’s terms, Trap music would be best described as a recipe;
1/3 hip hop (tempo and song structure similar) – however vocals are usually pitched lower or higher
1/3 dubstep (similar drum arrangements, different builds and drops)
1/3 dub (Low frequency focus and strong emphasis on repetitiveness throughout a song)
The song first appeared on Soundcloud exactly a month ago and has had over half a million listens since then. Hit play below to hear for yourself.
What do you think of Higher? As always I’m open to your comments in the section below.
I’ll be back next week with another jam!
